The Ecology Action Centre will be holding a workshop titled: Marine Biological Invasions: A Perspective on Atlantic Canada and New England. The workshop will take place from May 13th to 15th, 2001 at the University of Kings College in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. This workshop is designed to promote public awareness of marine biological invasion issues, to identify and promote actions to reduce and prevent invasions and to consider the formation of a Canadian-American panel on aquatic invasive species. The geographical focus of the workshop will be the Northwest Atlantic. The workshop will cover four main topics: the ecology of invasions, impacts of invasions, approaches taken by other countries, and solutions. The workshop will afford an opportunity for dialogue on marine invasions. The keynote speaker is Dr. Chad Hewitt, Centre for Research on Introduced Marine Pests (CRIMP) in Australia. He will provide a global perspective on marine invasive species and describe polices from Australia, a region especially hard hit by invasions. Dr. Allegra Cangelosi, from the Northeast Midwest Institute, in Washington, D.C. will outline technologies to treat ballast water to remove invaders. Other speakers will be featured from government agencies including Transport Canada, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, industry, including shipping, fishing and aquaculture, and academia. Participants are invited from government, industry, academia, the media and the private sector of Atlantic Canada and New England. We encourage participation by anyone interested in marine biological invasions. The early registration fee for the workshop is $100.00 CND ($50.00 for students). After April 13th the registration costs are $125.00 and $60.00 for students. Individuals who find the full fee prohibitive but would like to attend are asked to contact the workshop coordinator. Registration forms can be found on our website www.chebucto.ns.ca/Environment/EAC and can be faxed to the workshop coordinator. The workshop will open with a reception at the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History on the night of May 13th. The following two days will be a mix of presentations, panels, discussions, and social events. The draft program for the workshop can be found on our website. A marine mystery boat tour and dinner will be held on the Halifax waterfront on the evening of May 15th. Participants may register for one or both events. Registration forms can be found on our web site and should be faxed to the workshop coordinator. The workshop proceedings will include abstracts of the presentations and posters, summaries of the panel discussions, conclusions and recommendations. A copy of the proceedings is included in the registration fee. Participants are invited to submit posters and displays relating to any aspect of marine bio-invaders, such as the biology or impact of marine invasive species, vectors of transport, preventative technologies or strategies, and public education measures.
