Did you know Halifax has a bike lane? It's one block long, on Brunswick
Street. Last winter, we couldn't even use that. Snow piled up on the
curb. People parked their climate-changers (cars) on the bike lane.

I wrote to HRM Councillor Dawn Sloane. She took action. The cars weren't
ticketed, but eventually, HRM staff agreed to clear the snow so they had
somewhere else to park.

Below are excerpts from the exchange of messages. Some of them are
interesting ... particularly Rebecca O'Brien's message about how snow
clearing is prioritized in Copenhagen. One of the HRM staff messages makes
it evident that here the priority is to clear every single street before
starting on the bike lane.

I happen to be in Copenhagen last week and wouldn't you have it.. there
was a snow storm for the first time in four years the weekend I was
there.

Picture this: I go for a walk when the storm clears and what do I see?
The roads are still full of snow, the sidewalk is semi -clear, and the
bike paths are perfectly plowed and salted. And guess what? the cars
were grumbling along, while the cyclists were cruising at regular speed.
Must be something to do with priorities...

I realise that Halifax is not Copenagen, but....we have two TWO mere
blocks of bike paths and still they are expendable in the winter.

If it is not legal for cars to park on the sidewalk, and it is not legal
for cars to park in the middle of the highway, why is it ok for cars to
park on the bike path? Must be something to do with priorities...

Dawn, We were going to try to get this location last night with the blower
but time ran out and the narrow street in your area was more important so
we did them first. I will asked Bob Young to try to get the bike lane for
you.

Ken Wilson.

Councillor, we have this location identified for snow removal, however we
have been frustrated by both weather conditions and parked cars outside of
weather conditions. We intend to temporarily bag the meters along this
area and will carry out a curb cut which should improve the situation.
This will be done as soon as work scheduling and weather conditions
permits.

Dawn, We were able to clear the snow out of the bike lane on the west side
of Brunswick Street only because the police would only have the cars moved
or towed from that side because the meter bags were removed from the east
side that restricted parking an d they said we would have to bagged them
again and they have to be up for 24 hours before they would enforce them.
I will have them bagged again on the east side today and try to get it
that lane cleared tomorrow night for you.

Ken Wilson.
