PUBLIC FORUM ON GENETICALLY ENGINEERED SALMON The first genetically engineered animal destined for North American dinner plates is being developed right here on PEI by Aqua Bounty Farms in Souris. American biotech corporation A/F Protein owns Aqua Bounty. Foreign genes have been inserted into Atlantic Salmon causing the fish to grow 6 times faster than normal. The genes cause salmon to produce growth hormones year-round instead of just during the warm months. Approval to sell these Frankenfish is being sought in the US and Canada, and supporters predict a dramatic increase in fish farm operations around the world. Greenpeace, along with the Council of Canadians, Earth Action and the National Farmers Union is holding a public forum on GE fish to raise issues around food safety, the environment, ethics and industrial food production. Aqua Bounty Farms and MPs Lawrence MacAulay and Wayne Easter have been invited to attend.
