Please also copy mesages regarding the tour visiting your community to: Marco Morency <emm2364@umoncton.ca> and Aaron Koleszar <aaronk@isn.net> thanks a ===================================================================== From: "la C.L.A.C." <clac@tao.ca> Hi there and Happy New Year -- This e-mail is being sent to various people who've made contact with the CLAC (Anti-Capitalist Convergence) in hxrT_&yMontreal from the Maritimes. Many of you have e-mailed us in the past few weeks and months, and our apologies for not having responded sooner, but we've been swamped with literally hundreds of requests. After this e-mail, you will get three more: 1) An update from the CLAC with basic info. 2) A call-out for the CLAC/CASA Consulta in Quebec City on January 27-28. 3) A call-out for the ftaa-l list. If these messages don't answer your basic questions, don't hesitate to get back in touch at clac@tao.ca. Many of you have also expressed interest in hosting activists from Quebec City and Montreal to participate in local awareness-raising efforts about the FTAA, the Summit of the Americas and organizing in Quebec. Both the CLAC and CASA (based in Quebec City) will be able to undertake a Maritime Zcaravan tour between January 29 to February 9. This would be a two-week period just after the Consulta in Quebec City. There are tentative plans for the first couple of days taking place in the Gaspesie region of Quebec before heading into New Brunswick. Members of the CLAC and CASA would participate, with perhaps other activists from the Maritime region. Crucially, this tour is only desirable insofar as it fits in with your own local awareness-raising and action efforts against the FTAA and capitalist globalization. We do not want to come to your area as "experts"; rather, we'd like to work in collaboration with local activists, in a spirit of solidarity. All that being said, tour participants from the CLAC and CASA can offer workshops and presentations, in English and French, on various topics: NAFTA, FTAA and the Summit of the Americas; capitalist globalization; organizing from Seattle to Quebec; "on-the-ground" reports about what's happening in Quebec City; globalization and its effects on women; building and re-inforcing anti-capitalist networks of resistance; and much more. CLAC previously organized a two-week tour of Ontario this past October. Five members of the CLAC presented workshops, participated on panels, and met hundreds of activists all over the province, from Windsor to Toronto, Sudbury to Ottawa. Generally, in most cities or towns, we would present workshops or do a panel during the day at a local university or college, followed by a larger community event in the evening. Throughout the day, we'd also pass on info informally with our meetings with local activists, as well as do community media interviews if necessary. Logistically, CLAC and CASA members would rent a car and undertake the tour for two weeks, starting from Quebec City. From your end, we'd need about $200-300 per city (to pay for gas, rental and food expenses). As for lodgings, we're not fussy: just a floor and access to a shower will do. During the Ontario tour, many community groups were able to secure some funding from student groups at a university, which enabled the visit to the area, and provided a chance for an evening presentation to the local community. So, if you're interested in activists from CLAC and CASA visiting your area, please get in touch ASAP. Here's how the schedule is looking (assuming that we'll be spending 1-3 days in the Gaspesie). We will start in NB, but from there the schedule is flexible. As of now, there are no plans to visit Newfoundland, as there are no contacts there. January 29: Gaspesie (or travel day) January 30: Gaspesie/NB January 31: Gaspesie/NB (Fredericton?) February 1: NB (Saint John?) February 2: NB (Moncton?) February 3/4: weekend -- NB/NS/PEI (Sackville? Charlottetown?) February 5: NB/NS/PEI (Halifax?) February 6: NS/PEI February 7: NS/PEI (Wolfville?) February 8: NS/PEI/NF February 9: NS/PEI/NF Look forward the hearing from you, and perhaps seeing you very soon too. Stay in touch. -- The CLAC External Liaison Working Group \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ La Convergence des luttes anti-capitalistes (CLAC) The Anti-Capitalist Convergence La Convergencia de las luchas anti-capitalistas A Convergencia das lutas anti-capitalistas clac@tao.ca -- 514-409-2049 http://www.quebec2001.net /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ ********************************************************************* Aaron Koleszar <aaronk@isn.net> _____________________________________________________________________ FTAA/Quebec Related Websites OQP (Occupation Quebec Printemps [Spring] ) http://www.oqp2001.org (English, French and Spanish) Anti-Capitalist Convergence (CLAC) http://www.quebec2001.org (English, French and Spanish, Italian, Portugese) http://quebec.indymedia.org (English, French and Spanish) _____________________________________________________________________ The 2000 election has further solidified the grasp of corporate capitalism on the governance of Canada. In what amounts to a virtual dictatorship, the arrogant right wing (Neo)Liberals are poised to continue the wholesale sell-off of Canada to mostly American corporations, as well as tax cuts for the rich, at the expense of the environment, the poor, aboriginals, and other minorities. The "official" opposition - the newly garbed Reform party - will not oppose the NeoLiberal cuts and tax-breaks. They will only force the (Neo)Liberals further to the right. The lopsided election results demonstrate the futility of trying to change our society through traditional electoral politics while we're living in a capitalist economic system where the public is overwhelmingly influenced by mainstream corporate media, and the government is overwhelmingly controlled by transnational corporations. So it is up to us to build the REAL opposition. Opposition in our communities, opposition in the streets. We must build the movement that will place power in the hands of the people instead of the elites. There are many more people being exploited than doing the exploiting. We are very powerful - all we need to do is realize it and get organized! One important step will be the moblization against the FTAA between now and April. See you in Quebec! _____________________________________________________________________ FOR THE REAL NEWS ON PROTESTS AND DIRECT ACTION AGAINST THE WTO IN SEATTLE, THE IMF/WORLD BANK IN WASHINGTON & PRAGUE, G-20 IN MONTREAL, THE FTAA IN QUEBEC, AND OTHER PAST AND FUTURE ACTIONS, VISIT: http://www.indymedia.org - The Independenat Media Center (IMC) THEN FOLLOW THE LINKS TO LOCAL IMCS
