The purpose of this e-mail is to inform about an emerging project to take place in Halifax sometime during the summer of 2001. The idea is to construct a natural building (straw bale or cob) in Halifax to promote sustainable building practices. To that end, we are in the process of trying to secure a donation of land for the construction of a public showcase. Ideally, we are looking for someone who is interested in having a natural building built on their property for their personal use. (i.e. artist studio, workspace, etc.) Natural building is an incredibly exciting and 'new' concept, although it has been around for hundreds of years in England. There are a number of houses even here in Nova Scotia which employed the natural building concepts in their construction. While it's not the solution to the environmental despair of our planet, it is an alternative to the unsustainable use of concrete, timber, and synthetic materials in housing construction. (For more info on natural building, see the Cob Cottage Company's website and links: http://www.deatech.com/cobcottage/) MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT: Since this is still in the infancy stage of devlopment, there aren't concrete details but the idea is to get a group of people together in a positive community atmosphere to learn about and build a straw bale or cob house in Halifax next summer. There is a possibility that participation in the project would result in a credit at Dalhousie. To that end, we need: -land for the building -a labour force of positive individuals who want to help make a grass-roots change in our destructive and ultimately unsustainable building practices -funding (natural building is A LOT cheaper than a conventional home but still costs some bucks) If you or anyone you know is interested in this project, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE e-mail me (jeffusensei@yahoo.com). As I said, this project is still in its infancy so if you're interested now is the time to get involved, so you can help us hammer out the details. Please pass this on to anyone you think might be interested and/or can help.
