TWO-WAY STREET

The rebuilding of communities by developing and controlling their own
resources has been the lifelong vision of a charismatic activist named Juan
Tellez. Born in a remote village in Bolivia, Juan has become an
international figure in the field of community-based economic development.

Two-Way Street follows the story of Juan's quest as a young seminary student
inspired by the work of liberation theology priests. He began organizing
indigenous movements, establishing co-operatives, and working with
grassroots political organizations despite the repression of the military
regime of Bolivia in the 1970's. Through contact with Canadian aid
organizations he moved to Nova Scotia in 1990 and began working with
communities that have been hard-pressed by crises in fishing, farming, coal
mining, and other industries affected by the invisible hands behind
globalization.

Community development is an international two-way street, and Juan's
experience, skills and knowledge gained in Bolivia are now assisting
communities in Canada. His work is dedicated to re-establish people's
confidence, to elicit the dreams of community leaders and to build capacity
in communities.

Two-Way Street is a triumphant story of bringing hope to communities and
features some of the successes of community-based development in Nova
Scotia- including New Dawn Enterprises and Isle Madame in Cape Breton, the
Stan Rogers Festival in Canso, and the Antigonish movement.
