------ Forwarded Message ------ From: Citizens' Voluntary Labelling Collective <cvlcpei@hotmail.com> For Immediate Release May 25, 2000 Concerned Citizens Put Warning Labels On Genetically Engineered Foods In Charlottetown Supermarkets Charlottetown, PEI - Yesterday, members of the Citizens' Voluntary Labelling Collective (CVLC) put warning labels on genetically engineered (GE) foods in supermarkets across Charlottetown. Since the Canadian government has clearly stated their support for Voluntary Labelling, some citizens have decided to volunteer. The group visited a number of supermarkets and stuck at least 1300 stickers on products likely to contain GE crops. The group of concerned citizens, fed up with inaction by the Canadian government and the food industry, felt obliged to act. They feel it is their responsibility to inform consumers of what is really in their food. Survey after survey shows that most Canadians believe that GE food should be labelled, if not banned. One anonymous labeller explained "The biotech revolution, led by agrochemical corporations and outrageously supported by American and Canadian governments, is literally bringing us a new model of development, in which life is the new raw material that can be transformed in endless ways to maximize private profits and corporate control, while bringing quick-fix solutions to symptoms of our problems and putting aside their real causes." Targetted products consisted primarily of products which contain corn, canola, or soy. In North America around half of these crops are genetically engineered, and since GE varieties of these crops are mixed with non-GE varieties, contamination of each product is virtually guaranteed. The labels read "WARNING: This product may contain genetically engineered material which has not been adequately tested and could be dangerous to your health." People do not want to be lab rats in this unnecessary and unsafe experiment. So citizens across the country and around the world are applying safety warnings in a growing movement to fill the role that government has abdicated. From now until the government fulfills its responsibilities, citizens themselves will continue to act. The Citizens' Voluntary Labelling Collective (CVLC) has only just begun! -30- For more info, contact: <cvlcpei@hotmail.com> For photos, contact: <rumba@cam.org> ********************************************************** Aaron Koleszar <aaronk@isn.net> _________________________________________________________ FOR THE REAL NEWS ON THE A16 IMF/WORLD BANK PROTESTS, VISIT: http://www.indymedia.org - The Independenat Media Center http://www.a16.org - Mobilization for Global Justice DON'T TRUST THE CORPORATE MEDIA! For us, breaking the law is not a frivolous gesture, but rather a last-resort means of exposing the immense powers that we all face when we attempt to create real, ethical change. We continue to draw inspiration from the civil rights, anti-nuclear, anti-war, environmental justice, labor rights, and anti-oppression movements. Who are we? We are your sons and daughters, your sisters and brothers, your fathers, mothers, grandfathers, and grandmothers. We are your co-workers, your fellow parishioners and rabbis, your healers, your teachers, and your students. We will continue to risk arrest, and if necessary resist with our very lives, until we expose this world as one in which profits come before people, so that a more just, humane, and free global society may take its place. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- The preceding message was posted on the Sustainable Maritimes mailing list (sust-mar). http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/lists/sust-mar -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Sponsors: Chebucto Community Net http://www.chebucto.ns.ca Sierra Club - Chebucto Group http://www.sierraclub.ca Volunteer moderator: Paul Falvo mailto:sust-mar-owner@chebucto.ns.ca PLEASE SEND MESSAGES TO SUST-MAR IN PLAIN TEXT ONLY MESSAGES CONTAINING HTML (MIME) CANNOT BE POSTED
