Hello, We are hearing a lot about the hazards to biodiversity and human health associated with the use of pesticides on private lawns, parks, schools and shopping areas. Many biologists and medical professionals have warned of the dangers of pesticide poisoning, and several municipalities, including Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), are considering legislation banning or severely restricting the use of chemical pesticides for so-called "cosmetic" uses. Questions arise about alternative methods of turf management. In response to this, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, in conjunction with Windhorse Farm, will offer a class in "natural turf care" taught by two well-known and eminently qualified scientists, Dr. David Patriquin and Dr. Nick Hill. You are invited to join us at Windhorse Farm from 4-8 PM, Wednesday, June 14th. I will include below the official announcement of the class. Sincerely, Jim and Margaret Drescher Natural History and Natural Care of Turfs Wednesday, June 14th, 4 - 8 pm Professors David Patriquin (Agroecologist, Dalhousie University) and Nicholas Hill (Plant Ecologist, Mount Saint Vincent University) will lead this workshop at Windhorse Farm. It will include discussion and illustration of the ecology of various species of grasses and herbs, and of how pests, diseases, and the balance of plant species are affected by management. (Please feel free to bring an evening snack.) _________________________________ Susan Bone, MLIS Editorial and Research Services R.R.#1, LaHave, N.S.
