---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 16:13:22 -0300 From: Ramona Ryan <rryan@mgmt.dal.ca> Cc: cwhite@canadians.org Subject: bulk export of water We are asking our friends who agree with the statement below to please ask your organization to endorse it, and return it to the Council as soon as possible. Below that is another statement which we are asking groups and individuals to sign and send to your local environment ministers. A list of their addresses in included. Thanks for your help in stopping water exports, Cliff White Regional Organizer Council of Canadians ****** STOP THE ACCORD! Canadians and Parliament have urged the federal government to ban the bulk export of water. The federal government has responded by proposing a voluntary federal-provincial accord on water. This accord is not binding or enforceable, it is based on continental drainage basins, not ecosystem supporting watersheds, and it actually allows bulk water exports. Provincial environmental measures by themselves, no matter how well designed or well intended will not protect Canadian water from short-sighted profiteers and the rights conferred on them by international trade agreements. Therefore, we are asking experts and activists from across Canada to show their disapproval by signing the following statement. SIGN-ON: "I/We reject the federal-provincial accord on water because it is voluntary, environmentally ineffective and explicitly allows the bulk export of water. We call on the federal government to ban bulk water exports and to exempt water from all current and future international trade, investment and service agreements." Please send replies to Jamie Dunn, Water Campaigner mailto:jdunn@canadians.org tel 1800 387-7177 fax (613) 233-6776 -- The Council of Canadians, Maritime Organizing Office 6009 Quinpool Rd. Hlfx. NS. B3K 5J6 Ph. 422-7811, Fax: 429-6082 Dear Minister: The proposed federal-provincial water accord will undermine provincial environmental legislation and put Canada's water at greater risk of being exported. I urge you not to endorse this accord. Instead, I ask that you demand that the federal government do its job - ban bulk water exports and remove water from all current and future trade agreements.
