Hello Folks: As you may know a few members of the Transportation Issues Committee at EAC are working on a proposal to fund a car-share for the HRM Peninsula. We have prepared a short survey and would like to have it distributed to the CNNA members. There is a relatively tight deadline on the proposal so we are looking for a very quick turn around. I'd like to get responses in by this coming Monday, May 15. I am aware that having it distributed through email will leave a lot of people but this is very preliminary. There is an introduction about what a car share is as part of the survey. One of our principal objectives is to support more sustainable transportation by having people either eventually give up their car or not have a second car. Surveys of car share members in other areas indicate that 1 car share replaces 5 individually owned cars and that people who are members of car shares are much more likely to use other forms of transportation such as public transit, cycling, rollerblading, walking etc. According to most recent figures from the CAA, in Canada the average cost of owning and operating a car (excluding parking) is about $8,000. Even more startling is information from Stats Canada "The Daily" (Wednesday, April 5,2000)Quarterly Retail Commodity Survey (1999 and fourth quarter 1999(preliminary)) which indicates the following cheery news: Consumers spent more on motor vehicles and related parts and services in 1999 than they did on food, non-alcoholic beverages, and clothing and footwear combined. Of every $100 of retail spending in 1999, Canadians purchased $35.70 worth of motor vehicles and related parts and services, $19.50 worth of food and non-alcoholic beverages, and $9.70 worth of clothing, accessories and footwear. Bruce Wark has done a lot of analyses of the costs of cars to society and estimates the annual cost of traffic accidents in Nova Scotia is $275 million. Note: To fill out the survey simply forward the message to me <peggy.cameron@ec.gc.ca> and then complete the survey within the existing text. Please note also that **confidentiality is assured and no information will be released in association with any names**. The survey is merely intended to determine the level of interest and target group as a support for our proposal. Thanks-Peggy _______________________________________________________________ CAR SHARE SURVEY Introduction The concept of car-sharing has become gradually more acceptable to the general public as more and more examples of successful car-share organizations are covered by national media. Since 1988, the community of Swiss, German and Dutch car-sharers has grown continuously: some 200 car-share organizations supply about 1000 cars for a total of 15,000 users. In Canada, car-share organizations exist in Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Guelph, Vancouver and Victoria. The oldest of these is Quebec’s AutoCom which now has a fleet of 20 cars serving about 200 members. Car sharing is a service that gives members 24-hour access to a car, parked in their neighbourhood, for periods as short as one hour or as long as you need. The fixed cost of car ownership i.e. financing, insurance, taxes, registration and maintenance are shared. · Cars are booked with a simple phone call · Members pick up the car and drop it off at the agreed time. The cars are parked conveniently near members’ homes · A trip log in the car is filled out after each trip to track time and distance, and to note if any maintenance is required. · A monthly itemized bill of your car use is provided, just like a utility bill. · Fuel costs are included! Members refill the gas tank if it falls below "1/2", but attach the receipt to the trip log for reimbursement on their monthly bill. · All administration, vehicle financing, insurance and maintenance is handled by the car-share organization. · Members also receive discounts when renting cars or using the bus. · Due to insurance requirements, you must be 23 years of age and have a clean driving record to join. ____________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________ Section 1: Personal Information This section is designed to help us understand who car-sharers are.
