Hello friends, We are looking to fill a field technician position to assist us with our field work this summer in old-growth and clearcut Acadian forests in Nova Scotia. Forest Research Assistant (May 1st - Aug. 31st). Our lab is currently investigating the impacts of anthropogenic (clearcut logging) and natural (treefall) canopy disturbance on understory plant biodiversity and red spruce regeneration in mature and old-growth Acadian forests. This work has strong conservation implications for the management of ancient Acadian woodlands, of which less than 1 % remain in our province. The position will involve assisting two graduate students with their data collection this summer in southwestern Nova Scotia. We often work under quite difficult field conditions (ticks, blackflies, rain, climbing over slash piles) and for this reason we are looking for someone who has had prior experience working outdoors (i.e. tree planting or field research). Knowledge of temperate forest flora is desirable. We will be living in Kejimkujik National Park with the occasional trip to Halifax. Position pays $8.75/hr and rent is free. There is the strong possibility that the contract will develop into a full-time lab position based at St. Mary's University in the fall. Please send a cover letter and C.V. c/o Helene LeBlanc electronically (h_leblanc@yahoo.com) or to the Dept. of Biology, St. Mary's University, Halifax, N.S. B3H-3C3 Deadline for Applications is April 21st. cheers Faisal Moola PhD. candidate Dalhousie University Halifax, N.S. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- The preceding message was posted on the Sustainable Maritimes mailing list (sust-mar). http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/lists/sust-mar -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Sponsors: Chebucto Community Net http://www.chebucto.ns.ca Sierra Club - Chebucto Group http://www.sierraclub.ca Volunteer moderator: Paul Falvo mailto:sust-mar-owner@chebucto.ns.ca
