TO TRULY GO GE-FREE Earth Action would like to commend AVC Inc. for raising pork without growth promoting hormones or antibiotics (a welcome break from industry norms). Earth Action also challenges AVC Inc. and other producers to ensure that their meat is truly "GE-free", that is, raised on non-genetically engineered animal feed, as European companies are doing and consumers are demanding. Aaron Koleszar, Earth Action's GE campaigner, states that "AVC Inc.'s claim of "GM-free" is questionable, as practically all Canadian meat is raised using genetically engineered feed. 25-50% of Canadian corn and soy are genetically engineered, and these crops are mixed with non-GE varieties, making contamination all but guaranteed." CBC Radio's news story on this issue referred to Doug Powell as a food safety expert. However, Powell has made a career of Risk Communications & Risk Management. This is clearly demonstrated by a book and papers he has authored, not to mention the name and content of his website - http://www.oac.uoguelph.ca/riskcomm/. Risk Communications is the art of reassuring the public that there is no (or little) risk. Powell appears to spend most of his time reassuring consumers and farmers that GE food is safe and extolling its alleged benefits. Powell receives funding from industry, and on the side publishes things such as "Crisis Response & Communication Manual", which leads one to wonder how sure he truly is of GE food safety. Koleszar emphasized "It's time to admit that farms should not be viewed as factories, animals should not be viewed as machines, and humans should not be used as lab rats. Consumers are demanding unadulterated food, so more and more North American companies are going GE-free. Which companies and farmers will left behind?" If you assume that there is an instinct for freedom, that there are opportunities to change things, there's a chance you may contribute to making a better world. That's your choice" - Noam Chomsky "We are going to have either fascism or democracy. If you sit on the sidelines it will be fascism." - Richard K. Moore
