Councillor Streatch's message generted a lot of interest. Below is a compilation of emails that people have sent sust-mar recently. I am not involved directly in this issue. To find out more, please contact: rate@chebucto.ns.ca, Maureen Reynolds <ax168@chebucto.ns.ca>, Helen Jones <hjones@chebucto.ns.ca> And PLEASE take the time to phone or write your councillor. It's important. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- 1 - action alert from RATE 2 - from Councillor Graham Read 3 - from Doug Linzey 4 - second reply from Councillor Streatch -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- From: RATE <rate@chebucto.ns.ca> =========================== IF YOU WANT A PESTICIDE BYLAW that will TOTALLY PHASE OUT THE USE OF LAWN PESTICIDES - PLEASE write, phone or email your municipal councillor NOW. The name of your councillor and contact information on how to reach him/her is available at 490-4050, and e-mails for individual councillors are available at this site: http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Environment/RATE/Email_Councillors.html -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- From: Graham Read <readg@region.halifax.ns.ca> Dear Mr. Falvo: I agree with you. My stand on the issue is that I would like to see pesticides on lawns banned at midnight tonight. More realistically, when the pesticide bylaw come up for debate in the next few weeks I would like to have it modified to provide for a b an starting this year. Unfortunately, what staff are recommending is the establishment of a registration system for those affected, along with an exclusion zone around their homes. In my view this does not go far enough and I will be arguing for a ban, at least one phased in over 3 or 4 years, if not immediately which I would prefer. Sadly, there are still too many councillors who do not comprehend the seriousness of the issue, for the health of affected individuals, the environment, and the long term health of us all. Those of us who are on side on the pesticide issue need help to c onvince the other councillors. We can do some arm twisting but we need their residednts to put pressure on them as well. You can help by encouraging your friends and acquaintances to call and write to their councillors, to sign petitions, to speak to th e media. Please call if you want more info, and please speak up whenever you can. Graham Read -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- From: Doug Linzey <nstn0308@fox.nstn.ca> Paul A Falvo <pfalvo@chebucto.ns.ca> forwards a message from a Halifax councillor: >Haligonians, particularly those living in District 1, may find the >following email from Councillor Stephen Streatch to be of interest. > >Does anyone know what his connection is to Alan Streatch and Kenneth >Streatch of Turf Masters Lawn Care? Is this a conflict that should prevent >Councillor Streatch from voting on this issue? Regardless of his possible relationships, what councillor Streatch says makes sense, i.e., that an outright ban on pesticides in HRM would be unworkable. His final paragraph points to the kinds of discussion that might eventually lead to a satisfactory solution: ". . . I will work to have the word "banned" removed from the by-law and replace it with words and terms such as, advance notice, posting notice, education, and last but not least, the term that seems to be lacking the most...common sense. " By the way, Paul, I notice that you don't include councillor Graham Read's e-mail address. He's an intelligent and thoughtful person who can be a good friend on council. <readg@region.halifax.ns.ca> Doug Linzey -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 19:28:57 -0400 From: Stephen Streatch <streats@region.halifax.ns.ca> Dear Mr. Falvo, Thank-you for your most recent reply. One of these days I would look forward to meeting you in person, but for now E-mail seems to be the medium of the day. My family has been in the farming and agriculture business for over 150 years here in the Musquodoboit Valley. You are right that I am related to both Ken and Alan Streatch, directors of Granview Farms Ltd.and Turfmasters Ltd. Neither of these compan ies are involved in any way with the application of residential lawn care sprays or any other services relating to the proposed by-law. Not only is Turfmasters not involved in this business they do not have a license to apply residential sprays or the de sire to do so. We milk cows and grow and lay nursery sod. In no way am I in a conflict of interest. In fact I feel that my experience and familiarity with the safe and proper ways to use and apply pesticides gives me a little more insight than most, and the ability to articulate the point more logically rather than emotionally. Yours truly, Steve Streatch Councillor District 1 -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- The preceding message was posted on the Sustainable Maritimes mailing list (sust-mar). http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/lists/sust-mar -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Sponsors: Chebucto Community Net http://www.chebucto.ns.ca Sierra Club - Chebucto Group http://www.sierraclub.ca Volunteer moderator: Paul Falvo mailto:sust-mar-owner@chebucto.ns.ca
