Young Men and Violence Project in Belfast, Northern Ireland A Public Presentation and Discussion Hosted by Men For Change Halifax Date: Monday, March 13, 2000 Time: 7:30pm Location: Universalist Unitarian Church, 5500 Inglis Street, Halifax Everyone welcome to attend a free public talk on working for peace with youth on the streets of Belfast. Our colleagues from Ireland will share the personal stories of their involvement in the peace and reconciliation process as well as address the following key points: * the violence in Northern Ireland over 30 years has had very negative effects upon youth but it has had some very positive effects in terms of community action. * young men are considered by many to be dangerous but they are also victims rigid ways of defining masculinity. * we need to listen very carefully to young men to find the solutions of the problems they pose to themselves and society. About the Presenters Tim Chapman is a trainer/consultant in youth justice and was the Assistant Chief Probation Officer for Northern Ireland. Alex Calderwood, age 31, has served prison time as a political prisoner for murdering Catholics. Elaine Brown, whose family members were killed by Alex, now works together with him as Community Youth Workers with young men on the streets of Belfast. They will share their personal stories of reconciliation and healing as well as their work with violent young men.
