Dear Sust-Mar subscribers, CKDU's annual funding drive is well underway. Halifax's only community / campus radio station has to raise 50,000 $ every year in order to stay on the air. While this isn't the whole operating budget, this community support is absolutely necessary for alternative radio to stay on the air. If you haven't tuned in yet, turn your dial to 97.5 FM. Right now we're in the middle of funding drive and the programmers are offering up prizes to entice you to donate to the station. Programming is a little crazy this week because of funding drive, but it's fun to listen to for a while. I'm writing to you from CKDU's news room right now. It's Tuesday afternoon and the fundraising total is close to breaking the 20,000 $ mark. There's lots of good energy around here. People are working on funding drive, a programmer is in the production room editing a reel to reel tape, and the staff are keeping things organized. After this weekend the station will return to it's regular schedule, bringing you diverse programming 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I have been a programmer at CKDU for 4 years now. I started out doing a current affairs show and then switched over to an open format timeslot that allows me to mix music and stories. You can hear my show every Wednesday afternoon at 3 pm. It's called Wallflower's Revenge. Imagine a flower growing through asphalt. Last year one of the people who donated to my show won the grand prize draw, a trip for two to Amsterdam! To enter this year's grand prize draw you need to donate 25 $ for each entry. This also gets you a prize like a CD, and a "Friends of CKDU card" that gives you discounts at local businesses. (50 $ gets you 2 entries into the draw, a couple of prizes, a t-shirt, and a friends card.) You also get interesting progrmamming all year round. Dial 49-HAPPY to donate to CKDU. Here's a selection of shows that people interested in environmental issues might be interested in: Monday - noon - ECOLOS - hosted by Paul Schreenan -a focus on local environmental issues and activists Monday - 6 pm - THE WALKING STICK - John Sylliboy and Lola Doucet -native news and music Tuesday - 6:30 am Friday - 3 pm - TIME OF USEFUL CONSCIOUSNESS - - a current affairs show from away that often focuses on environmental issues Sunday - 11:00 am - ALTERNATIVE RADIO - another current affairs show from away that has recordings of interesting talks Weekdays at 5 pm - THE EVENING AFFAIR - a daily current affairs show that explores alternative news stories and interviews, often about environmental issues. Other shows that I haven't listed often discuss environmental issues and lots of other interesting things. You can pick up a programming guide at most local libraries. You can also get involved as a programmer if you're interested. Call the office at 494-6479. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- The preceding message was posted on the Sustainable Maritimes mailing list (sust-mar). http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/lists/sust-mar -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Sponsors: Chebucto Community Net http://www.chebucto.ns.ca Sierra Club - Chebucto Group http://www.sierraclub.ca Volunteer listowner: Paul Falvo sust-mar-owner@chebucto.ns.ca
