Copies of a public discussion paper to kick off a review of
the provincial Environment Act are now available,
Environment Minister John Chataway said today.

The 12-page paper, which includes background information,
possible opportunities to improve the act and other details,
is meant to encourage the public to participate.

"We want to protect, manage and promote the environment and
we want Nova Scotians to help us do it," said Mr. Chataway.
"We urge all people to take an active interest in examining
  the Environment Act."

The discussion paper is available at no-charge on the
  department's website, www.gov.ns.ca/envi/dept/ecs, or by
calling 1-800-567-7544 and leaving your name and full
mailing address. Free copies will also be available this
week by visiting any of the department's offices around the
province and at the Nova Scotia Government Bookstore, 1700
  Granville St., Halifax.

The release of the discussion paper is the first step before
an advisory committee tours the province this spring looking
for input. The comments gathered during this public
consultation will be compiled and a report and
recommendations will be submitted to the environment
  minister by July 1, 2000.

Lisa Mitchell, chair of the advisory committee, said that
her group is eager to begin the review process.

"Your comments are important and we want to read them as
soon as you can get them to us," said Ms. Mitchell.

Written comments must be submitted by April 14, 2000. They
can be sent by mail to: Environmental Corporate Services,
P.O. Box 2107, fifth floor, 5151 Terminal Rd., B3J 3B7; fax
 at 902-424-0501; and e-mail at ecs@gov.ns.ca .

The Nova Scotia Department of the Environment is conducting
a review of the Environment Act as required by legislation.

Copies of the Environment Act are available for free on the
department's website and for a fee at the government
   bookstore.
