Since this list represents citizens who are concerned about the environment
and our city, I thought I would send this for your consideration.

I met yesterday with Steven Snider (swsnider@hdbc.ns.ca) to discuss the
wisdom of purchasing new lights for the MacDonald Bridge and it seems that
the lights have already been purchased and are almost fully installed.
Since I am involved in the
tourism industry, I think that this is a wonderful addition to the tourism
assets of our city. That said, I also think it is the wrong direction for a
society that already uses much more energy than we should.

This is a copy of an email I sent to Steven this morning. If you feel the
same or have any other ideas, please send them along to swsnider@hdbc.ns.ca

Dear Steven

It was a pleasure meeting you yesterday and I thank you for taking the time
to listen to my concerns.

Since the lights are a "done deal," may I suggest lighting the bridge only
during special occassions (e.g.Christmas) and from May 15th+- to October
15th+- (Tourist season). To conserve more energy, the hours could be
reduced slightly from 1am to 12:30am or midnight. You may want to consider
only turning on half the lights between dusk and 11pm and then firing up
the whole bridge between 11pm and midnight. This would make the last hour
"special" and worth staying up for (and again saving half the power to
light the bridge).

If the lights are going to be on, it would be nice to set a precedence
of "lights-on" times with power conservation in mind. ..Alan

A word from our lawyers ...

Don't forget ... COPYRIGHT material, such as newspaper/magazine articles
cannot be posted on sust-mar without the owner's permission. It's against
the law. CROSS-POSTINGS (messages from other lists) are also discouraged.

In either case, why not tell us something about the issue in your own
words? Or ... send a clipping along with the URL where the original can be
found, or directions how to join the list it came from?

Takes a few more minutes, but makes for a more interesting sust-mar ... :)
