"Universities have a purpose. They are supposed to be pressing the boundaries of knowledge and inspiring student questioning;they are basically supposed to be subversive." - Noam Chomsky At the Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group this is our aim. We recognize that mainstream perspectives driven by excessive consumption and money-centered value systems dominate our society to such a degree that virtually all other viewpoints and values become excluded. We seek to enable more diverse, balanced public involvement, dialogue and debate about the decisions which affect us all. We are campus-based (at Dalhousie University) and student-funded with links to the broader community. Our goal is local, regional and global. We fund original research, advocacy and educational groups. Our office serves as a resource and research centre. If you don't know about us and want to find out more, check out our web site http://is2.dal.ca/~nspirg or drop by our office in room 314 of the Student Union Building. If you want to be added to our emailing list just send us a message with "subscribe" in the subject heading. Our working groups include: Cinema PIRGatory Eco-Action Peace Action Group Humans Against Homophobia Animal Liberation Collective Economic Justice Women's Health Collective Food Cooperative Seymour Green, organic community garden Our latest publication, Dalhousie Inc., the Corporatisation of a University by Ben Hirtle is available through our office. As well, in the next few weeks we will be releasing the 6th version of our Handy Dandy: A directory of alternative resources, centres and contacts in metro. It will also be available through our office. Or ... send a clipping along with the URL where the original can be found, or directions how to join the list it came from? Takes a few more minutes, but makes for a more interesting sust-mar ... :)
