Hi; August 19, 1999 Wild Atlantic salmon populations plummeted to 80,000 in 1999. At least = 201,000 are required to meet minimum spawning targets in North = America=92s rivers. During 1998, DFO began a process to revise the North Atlantic Salmon = Conservation Organization (NASCO) protocols for introducing and = transferring species between habitats. The aquaculture industry has = proposed using foreign fish strains. Fish farm escapees invade the = closest rivers. Appropriate regulations must be in place to protect wild = salmon from the disease, parasite and genetic pollution risks of these = farmed fish.=20 To ensure that revisions to NASCO=92s protocols do not negatively affect = wild Atlantic salmon, ASF requests that you write to Jacque Robichaud of = DFO (address below) by August 31, demanding that strict protocols be = used in the handling of exotic fish.
