Poking around Halifax this week i've had the good fortune to rub real life shoulders with a buncha sust-mar folk. In doing so, i've learned that folx have some questions and concerns about our list. First of all, HOW to post: Simply send your message to - - - - - - - > sust-mar@chebucto.ns.ca < - - - - - If you ever forget this it's at the bottom of every message. Secondly, there's a RUMOUR going around out there that i am holding back, i.e. not posting much of what i receive for sust-mar. Unlike most rumours, this one is simply not true :) Since this list became moderated last Dec, i have posted all but a handful of the messages i've received for the list. In fact, you can literally count on the fingers of one standard hand the messages i have not posted. If a message is remotely connected to the environment or sustainability or social justice in the Maritimes, i'm going to let it thru. It just might not happen instantaneously ... or even the same week if it is not a time-sensitive message. I see my role more as *prioritising* messages rather than censoring them [that's a job for your 'delete' key]. For example, despite his claims to the contrary, with the exception of a 30K message which i sent back for shortening, i have posted EVERY message ever sent by David Orton and Greenweb to this list [altho he has not reciprocated by allowing me to post a rebuttal on his Greenweb list]. However i have rejected some messages that had nothing to do with either the environment or the Maritimes. And i declined to approve a posting of the Canada Post email surcharge hoax. I do draw the line at editing messages. If i'm in a good mood i *might* chop off the ending of your message to bring it under the 10K size limit. But as a general rule, if you don't have time to edit your message, neither do i :) And, i even post DISCUSSION. But i bundle up messages on the same topic and send them together so as to keep things cleaner for busy folx. Oh ... and there was one exception to all this. [That proves the rule?] Recently a local eco-warrior sent me a forestry posting. I sent back a query asking if this was really related to the Maritimes. He replied that in fact it was and explained why. I said "fantastic ... would you mind adding to your post what you just told me?" but i guess he was too busy or exasperated at this point b/c it didn't come back. :( Since then i've altered my policy to "post first, ask later" ... in other words, if in doubt i will post a message now and ask later if it was on topic. Fair enough? :) Finally, do keep in mind that it's just me here, and i am a volunteer. All help is much appreciated, and sust-mar continues to evolve in response to subscriber demand. And i appreciate your "demands" too ... altho offers to help are always especially nice to get ... take care, all ~paul :) __________________________________________________________________________ Paul A.
