It's a slow news day here at sust-mar ... so i thought i'd pass along the following, which originated from Alan Stevens <pogo@islandnet.com>. Although it was originally sent in response to a debate we had on sust-mar a long time ago and which i do not wish to rehash (!), i think it contains sound advice that applies at any time. [. . .] >Here, to wind up with, isthe "Protocol for Electronic Communication" which >was unanimously passed by concensus at the BC Greens Provincial Council >Meeting Saturday March 8 [1998?]: > >PROTOCOL FOR ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION > >The basic values of the Green Party are the result of very long >discussions and have stood the test of time as reference points for policy >and for our resulting actions. The titles: ecological wisdom, grass roots >democracy, personal and social responsibility, non violence, >decentralization, community-based economics, post patriarchal values, >respect for diversity, global responsibility, and future focus speak to >the role models we should attempt to be in Canadian society at large. > >At the same time we must also be mindful of the fact that the full range >of human beings' communications skills includes vocal inflections, as well >as facial and body gestures. With the introduction of the phone and radio >we had to re-learn how to understand a message by listening to the tone of >the voice that was speaking. With the introduction of film and television, >the transportation of human images reappeared in a limited form, subject >to the vision and censorship of those who controlled the camera lens. > >With E-mail (like newspapers, books and some web sites) the subject matter >comes in the form of the printed word. Here, interpretation of the message >is subject to the imagination of the reader, who may find that certain >words, by themselves, have a different meaning than the writer intended. >To avoid undue misinterpretation we suggest that, in any communication, >Greens observe the following protocols by asking themselves: > >1. What is the essential part of my message? > >2. Who needs to see or hear it? > >3. What medium is the most appropriate for the message? > >4. Am I communicating to those who do not need it? > >5. Am I using the ease of communicating by E-mail to send ill-thought out >messages and superfluous material? > >6. Does the absence of face-to-face contact make it easier for me to be >careless of the feelings of others and to make >hurtful thrusts or harmful asides? > >7. Am I being sufficiently aware of the possible leakage of my message >beyond those to whom it is addressed? > >8. Am I using the absence of others to place my own ego's needs ahead >of the >collective needs of the Green party? > >9. Does my functionary role or ex-officio role within the Green party >require that I consult others before communicating >this message? > >10. What kind of a role model am I being for other members and supporters if >I communicate my message in its present form? > >------------------------------------------------------------- > [. . .] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- Let us have the truth, though the heavens may fall -- Herbert Shelton -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- You received this because you are subscribed to "sust-mar", the Sustainable Maritimes mailing list.
