Lately i've seeen a couple of messages on sust-mar that are preceeded by a string of addresses. This not only makes them harder to read, but it may cause a privacy concern for the people whose names and addresses appear at the front of the message (see below for an INTERNET privacy tip). Since sust-mar messages land in 100+ inboxes, plus they end up for perpetuity in our www archives, plus they tend to get forwarded around themselves, it is a good idea if you simply cut these extra addresses out using your delete function before you send the message to sust-mar. Cross-posts aren't encouraged to begin with, but if you are posting something to sust-mar that was sent to you from someone else or on another list, a few seconds of your time to clean up the message before you post it will make things a lot easier for others. I used to clean them up myself, but i'm busy too, and i've decided that it's not fair to me for me to do this for 100 people when people can do it themselves just as easily :) Net Tip -- Privacy -- Many of your fellow employees and friends are concerned about privacy issues regarding their use of the internet. One way that you can respect this concern is to consider how you use their E-mail addresses. Most of you have received E-mails with long lists of recipients, or worse, forwards, of forwards, of forwarded E-mails, each with a list of names and E-mail addresses. Maybe some of you have passed these on to your friends, or composed and sent an E-mai l To: or Cc: (carbon copied) a whole group of friends at once. This gives all those people the E-mail addresses of everyone else. If you are surprised at getting this, that may be how your E-mail address got included in this mailing! :-O An E-mail address that a friend gave to you for private communications could end up in the process of being distributed around the world! This can become a source for junk mail or spam. Or maybe just one address of a friend is passed on to someone whom they would prefer did not know it... There are two ways to avoid this faux pas: Copy the relevant text and paste it into a new E-mail. (If in doubt, first ask permission from the original author) If you are sending the E-mail to multiple recipients, use the blind copy(Bc) feature available in your E-mail program. The best way to do this, is to send the E-mail To: your own E-mail address, and Bc all the recipients. All those who get the E-mail will have headers that show your address in the To: and From: fields. This protects the privacy of everyone you sent t he E-mail to. Check in the Help files in your E-mail program on how to Bc. This page has description of how to use the blind copy feature for the most common E-mail programs. Even Pine, the oldest commonly used E-mail program, has this feature. If you can't figure it out, send an E-mail to the software company that wrote the E-mail program that you are using. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- You received this because you are subscribed to "sust-mar", the Sustainable Maritimes mailing list.
