Eaton" <jeaton@fox.nstn.ca> Date: Fri, 2 Apr 1999 14:37:38 +0000 Subject: Serbian Ecological Society Plea vs War !! The following message came to me from my own daughter who is a graduate student in ecology. She received it fourth hand through University Ecology networks !! It originates from the Serbian Ecological Society, Belgrade and is another one of the many entreaties coming from that region which reflect an awareness of the agenda of economic globalization and its myriad economic and political ramifications as the real context for this war --as you will see in the following quote from the authors of the article! " I do not believe bombing is a way of developing democracy and civil society in Serbia, Montenegro and Yugoslavia. I do not believe cruising missiles are appropriate tools for solving humanitarian problems on Kosovo. But I believe this war is an excellent opportunity for war industry in America, Russia and many other countries, war industry which perspective and development [is] based on permanent instability and many local wars, like in Africa, South America, Asia, and since recent years in the hearth of Europe... And best way how to hide someone's sexual oddity, budget scandals, corruption affairs or unsuccessful internal politics...... Serbian Ecological Society does hope that you personally and your scientific societies, as a very respected part of your democratic society, can and will help us." --President & Secretary of the Serbian Ecological Society, University of Belgrade, Faculty of Biology all the best, janet ================================================================================ Serbian Ecological Society Univ. Belgrade, Fac. Biol. M. Sci. Dmitar Lakusic, President dlakusic@EUnet.yu & Ass. Prof. Dr. Radoje Lausevic, Secretary rlausevi@EUnet.yu 29TH March 1999 Dear colleagues, Have you ever been exposed to a rocket attack? It is 16:50 PM, and NATO attack is in progress. Red alert state in Belgrade. We hope you have been informed about NATO attack on Yugoslavia. You obviously have your specific opinion about recent events in Europe, particularly in southern Serbian province of Kosovo. We do not want to agitate nor for changing of your opinion nor for any political opinion. We simply stress: NATO (is it military alliance for defense?) has brutally attacked Yugoslavia. Therefore, inhuman attack against our independent and sovereign Country remarkably marked the end of 20 century. I do not believe bombing is a way of developing democracy and civil society in Serbia, Montenegro and Yugoslavia. I do not believe cruising missiles are appropriate tools for solving humanitarian problems on Kosovo. But I believe this war is an excellent opportunity for war industry in America, Russia and many other countries, war industry which perspective and development base on permannet instability and many local wars, like in Africa, South America, Asia, and since recent years in the hearth of Europe... And best way how to hide someone's sexual oddity, budget scandals, corruption affairs or unsuccessful internal politics. I hope you can not support that approach. Serbian Ecological Society does hope that you personally and your scientific societies, as a very respected part of your democratic society, can and will help us: RAISE YOUR VOICE AGAINST VANDALISM, AGGRESSION AND WAR IN YUGOSLAVIA. Otherwise you should become a part of cruel aggression against Yugoslav natural and cultural heritage: sinful authorities from USA, Great Brittany, France and Germany, as well as from other NATO countries ordered bombing of National park Lovcen and Cetinje city - symbols of culture, history and nature of Montenego; THERE IS NOT ANY MILITARY TARGETS Vain and irresponsible presidents ordered bombing of the only one clear Serbian village in Kosovo, including monastery Gracanica from 14th century, one of the most important Serb historical and religious monument, protected also by UNESCO; THERE IS NOT ANY MILITARY TARGETS Unreasonable NATO attack endanger both Serbian people, tradition, culture, and natural heritage in whole Yugoslavia. Many national parks and protected areas, like Kopaonik, Tara, Fruska Gora, Prokletije, Sakadarsko lake, were bombed and devastated. First chemical accidents had happened as well. Fortunately, it was localized ones: a pharamceutical factory in Belgrade's suberb and rocket fuel tanks were destroyed. However, continuation of unreasonable attacks could produce globaly disasters with immense consequences both for our generation and fututre generations. We should have responsibility for our unborn child. During last five days our air defense had shoot down many cruise missiles and several NATO airplanes, including most contemporary ones. Normally, we should sorry for deaths of pilots, perhaps your compatriots. Many Serbs and Albanian lives are lost and we soory and pray for their souls. However, our prays can not resurrect anyone. Therefore we pray for your understanding: LET'S JOINTLY RAISE OUR VOICE AGAINST FUTURE DEATHS, AGGRESSION AND WAR IN YUGOSLAVIA. We pray for stop of any further deaths. And please, spread this appeal for help and peace to all of your colleagues. We will appreciate any comments. We are also on your disposal for any further explanations. NATO attack is still in progress. -- Serbian Ecological Society Univ. Belgrade, Fac. Biol. Inst. Bot. & Bot.
