1999 SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES AWARD
Call for Nominations

Nominations are now being received for the 1999 Sustainable Communities
Award -- an award of recognition given by EAC's Environment and Development
Committee.

This year's call for nominations in Nova Scotia follows the recent
recognition received by Sambro -- the third winner of the Award last year.
The people of Sambro were recognized for pioneering community-based
management in the groundfish fishery. Sambro was the first site of a
'community quota', managed by a board of local fishermen. The approach has
been repeated successfully on the Scotian Shelf and in the Bay of Fundy.
Fishermen in Sambro credit community quotas as having stabilized, and
essentially saved, their local fishery.

Bear River and the Clean Annapolis River Project are also former winners of
the Sustainable Communities Award. Other finalists last year include
Johnstown, in Cape Breton, and Cow Bay, on the Eastern Shore.

If you live in or know of a community fostering a cooperative culture, and
local ecologically-minded economic development please contact the Ecology
Action Centre's Environment and Development Committee at (902) 420-5732, by
April 15, 1999.

The award is open to Nova Scotian communities or community-based
organizations. Individuals and business enterprises are not eligible.
