Yea for Annapolis Royal. Wednesday, January 13, 1999 The Halifax Herald Limited A WORD OR TWO On the leading edge Annapolis Royal has a long and distinguished history but that does not mean it is living in the past. Instead, the town is at the forefront of modern technology, whether one is looking at tidal energy generation or at sewage disposal. In an undertaking that should be of interest to other communities seeking how best to deal with sewage disposal, Annapolis Royal is considering a new method of disposal which will employ natural forces in the treatment of waste water. Using a method now in place in River Hebert, the idea is to introduce a wetlands area which, by replacing chemical treatment, will discharge clean and odourless water into the nearby river. The final step in the treatment system relies on an artificial wetland through which nature can complete the cycle from sewage to good water. The natural process is preferable to the use of chemicals and contributes other benefits in addition to water improvement. For one, the artificial wetland provides a sanctuary for bird life. That, in turn, offers a recreation facility where people may indulge pastimes such as walking, bird-watching and the like. That is a definite boon in this environment-conscious generation. What Annapolis Royal is proposing possesses an innovative character which could point other communities to answers in their search for alternatives in disposing of sewage and waste water. _________________________________________________________________ Copyright © 1999 The Halifax Herald Limited _________________________________________________________________ References 0. http://www.herald.ns.ca/cgi-bin/home/altdisplaystory?1999/01/13+171.raw+altEditorial -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- You received this because you are subscribed to "sust-mar", the Sustainable Maritimes mailing list.
