The following is a rather disturbing news item that i clipped from NovaNews. The outdoors just wouldn't be the same without the cry of the loon. Is anyone interested in joining with me to work on this issue (likely but not necessarily through the Sierra Club). Does anyone have more information on the problem and what can be done about it? Are there groups already working on this locally? ~paul _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ LOONY LOONS: New research suggests that Nova Scotian loons are exhibiting unusual behaviour as a result of high blood-mercury levels. The new study, conducted by two Acadia University biologists suggests that the high mercury levels disrupt the chicks' energy balance and nerve function, leaving them vulnerable to predators. The researchers say that if the contamination continues, it could spell disaster for the Nova Scotia loon population.
