RED TAIL SUMMER CAMP CANCELLED? Press Release....For Immediate Release....January 11, 1999 Red Tail Nature Awareness Camp, Scotsburn, Pictou County, Nova Scotia The "detailed route hearing", held by a National Energy Board Panel between the Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline (M&NEP) and Billy MacDonald, owner of the Red Tail Nature Awareness Camp, was completed on Friday January 8, 1999. It is expected that the Panel will rule shortly on whether or not the natural gas pipeline route favoured by M&NEP or the alternative route favoured by supporters of Red Tail will be followed. Indications at the hearing, to those who support the work of the Camp, were that the route of M&NEP would be upheld by the National Energy Board. The Red Tail Nature Awareness Camp is issuing this press release to inform all its supporters that, in the event the NEB Panel rules in favor of the M&NEP route and against the route favoured by the camp and its environmental consultant, the summer camping program will have to be cancelled. "This is a difficult decision to make but there is no other alternative, from the perspective of the Camp", said Billy MacDonald. Mr MacDonald gave the following reasons why the summer camp will have to be cancelled if the M&NEP route is upheld: - The M&NEP route is within 300 meters of the Camp's main area and "quiet spots". The pipeline company fails to understand the importance of this area of old growth hemlocks with its "silence" and its significance as the soul of the camp. No amount of 'compensation' can compensate for this. All those who have attended Red Tail and supported it over the years will understand this. People who have attended will also understand why the camp cannot be moved to the South, as proposed by the company. - This gas pipeline will bring a great deal of noise during the construction phase, which would be in the summer camp period. Mr MacDonald said that "This construction activity and proposed rescheduling around the company's activities, will take away my energy which must remain focused on the children at the camp." - The M&NEP pipeline route cuts the regular everyday travel paths used by campers. The alternative route, unlike the route of the M&NEP, does not interfere with everyday travel paths. It will present some difficulties to the camp, but would not require the cancellation of the summer camping program. The company's route is the worst possible scenario for the camp. Mr MacDonald said, "It is clear that M&NEP was ill prepared to address the true meaning of the Red Tail Nature Awareness Camp." He also commented, "How could a panel of the National Energy Board decide the Camp's future without ever visiting it?" Because of the uniqueness of this case the NEB panel was not qualified to judge it, he concluded. -30- For additional information contact Billy MacDonald at (902) 485-4688 -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- You received this because you are subscribed to "sust-mar", the Sustainable Maritimes mailing list.
