Hello Sust-Mar Folks, I have information that can be used to aid in the "practical" sustainability of Maritime woodlots that contain large stands of mature hardwoods. This is a commercial venture that has been undertaken by 4 New Brunswick environmentalists who want to encourage the production of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP's) and discourage clearcutting. We are a co-op that plants North American Ginseng (Panax Quinquefolium) seeds and roots in Maritime mature and mixed hardwood stands. The plant takes 10 years from seed to harvestable roots and needs no pesticides or mechanized machinery. Market prices for Wild Roots have remained stable and are currently fetching $500+ a lb. Due to a supply glut in the agriculturally produced Ginseng market, we can obtain our planting stock at a 60% cheaper rate than last years season. This supply is likely to remain this way for only the next season, so this is the year to "invest." If you would like more information or to scheduale a site assessment, please contact me. We will be planting in Cape Breton from Oct 20th to roughly the 24th and would prefer to do all NS site assessments during this period or before the end of October. Thank you, Matthew Jonah More infomation can also be found at http://eiii.org/wildseng/index.htm Wilderness needs no defense. Only more defenders." -- Edward Abbey
