ACTION ALERT

RALLY

TUESDAY, APRIL 28 AT 1:30 PM IN FRONT OF THE LEGISLATURE BUILDING

The PEI Conservative government, in cahoots with the Liberal Party, is
attempting to ram a "Right to Farm" Bill through the legislature as quickly
as possible. The public has not been given the opportunity to examine this
totally regressive bill and to comment on it before it is made law. The
bill was drafted by the PEI Federation of Agriculture's hired guns and is
part of the Federation's agenda to intimidate and silence the public, and
to support corporate industrial agriculture.

If the bill is passed, people will not be able to go to the law to seek
compensation for damages caused by NORMAL farm practices until they first
appear before a farmer dominated board. Anyone complaining about a NORMAL
farm practice will be told to get lost. Pesticide spraying is a NORMAL
farm practice. The legal use of agricultural pesticides results in spray
drift contaminating other people's bodies and property, and groundwater.
The farmer dominated board will have the discretion to dismiss any
complaint if, in it's opinion, the complaint is "frivolous, vexatious or
trivial". The PEI Federation of Agriculture supports pesticide spraying
and considers human health information brought forward by environmentalists
to be fearmongering.

This bill will receive second reading on Tuesday. If this bill is passed,
it will be one more nail in the coffin for human and environmental justice
in this province, and a victory for corporate agribiz.

Earth Action is circulating a petition against this Farm Practices Act and
it will be presented to the Legislative Assembly by Herb Dickieson on
Tuesday afternoon. WE NEED YOUR SIGNATURE. There are petitions at the
Root Cellar and the Voluntary Resource Council to sign. Can you take a
petition and gather some signatures before Tuesday at 1:30? We cannot do
this alone. Your help is critical. Do not let this bill pass without a
show of public opposition. Petition and rally against injustice.
