Hi Harry, On Sun, 21 Oct 2012, Harry E. Slaunwhite wrote: > Why do I keep getting "The connection was reset" message each time I > log on and hitting "Try Again" lets me on? At certain times of the day, internet traffic goes through a rush hour (or several rush hours) and some pages get 'lost' or the request doesn't reach the site from which you're attempting to retrieve information. Your browser allows a fair amount of time for the requested data to arrive back at your site. When it doesn't, it will give up and allow you to, either, re-request it or move on. The message, 'the connection was reset', is just your browser telling you, it didn't get the requested data in the amount of time allotted. When you 'Try Again', there may be a small pocket of space in the internet datastream allowing your data to be retrieved. This occurs more and more as the internet is filled with more streaming information and, at peak times, such as student exam times etc. > More importantly, I'm presently using dial-up on my desk-top (Win Xp) > and plan on changing to a lap-top which will probably have Win 7, then > transfer my files and programs to the lap-top. Do a Google search for 'PuTTy for Windows 7' and install it. This is an SSH-compliant client (telnet is also included but not secured like SSH) and will give you the Chebucto log-in, once you've added the pertinent data. It will ask you for the site you want: chebucto.ns.ca, and once located, will give you the familiar log-in screen. I don't know about the newest PuTTy, but the older ones do not allow for up and down file transfer; so what I do, is move whatever I want to download to a folder I created called 'dl' in my public_html folder and then use that from which to download. For you, it would be: www.chebucto.ca/~at593/dl/ + whatever the filename is. Use your graphic browser to retrieve these files using that URL. Hope this helps, Tony @ CCN Help
