Hi Sharon. If the problem with your modem connecting is coming from the software somehow, restarting the computer would be the first thing to try. This resets the software. This sort of thing is not uncommon with older computers. If you're having trouble connecting, try this first and see if it sorts it. Another possibility is that the hardware on the modem or motherboard is starting to get old. This is the less likely alternative as usually hardware issues stop things from working at all. An internittent hardware failure can come from things like loose connections, where the heating and cooling from the computer being turned on and off can cause the modem to gradually wiggle out of its slot or crack a solder joint somewhere on the modem or motherboard. The fix there is to, when the computer is OFF and UNPLUGGED, open the case and make sure everything is seated correctly - the modem is firmly in its slot on the motherboard, any cables are firmly connected and not loose. Look at everything and make sure there are no obvious faults like burnt looking components or anything looking like it is leaking or bulging. So, odds are its software and rebooting the computer should fix it, but if it's not, then check the hardware out.
