Information Providers Committee Minutes (DRAFT) 7 June 2000 Meeting start 6:45 P.M.; adjorned 8:30 P.M. Present: Doug McCann (Chair) Mark Rushton David Potter Andrew Wright Sharon Parker Regrets: Michael Cormier Leo Deveau COMMITTEE STRUCTURE In order to strengthen the committee a more formal structure for the committee is being advocated. For continuity and responsibilty three new executive positions have been created. Vice Chair External - generally responsible for committee activities external to CCN (e.g. IP recruitment, contacts). On a rotating basis, with Vice Chair Internal, act as Chair in his/her absence. Vice Chair Internal - generally responsible for committee activities within CCN (e.g. IP editors, technical). On a rotating basis, with Vice Chair External, act as Chair in his/her absence. Secretary - generally responsible for committee documents (e.g. minutes, reports, committee web pages). Mark Rushton agreed to accept the position of Vice Chair External. Michael Cormier has been suggested for Vice Chair Internal. Ed Dyer has been suggested for Secretary. Other areas of responsibilty are open for suggestion and discussion. For example - a Features Editor. FUTURE MEETINGS Seminar Room 1 in the Computer Science Building will continue to be our facility of choice. Thursdays is a good day, but Wednesdays may be preferred by others. Members will be polled for their preference. Time: 6:30 to 8:30. Meetings to be held on the second Thursday (Wednesday) of each month. COMMITTEE RECRUITMENT In order to staff the many tasks that may fall to the IP Committee, more active members and volunteers are required. With Mark in the position of Chair, Volunteer Committee, it is hoped that more CCN volunteers could be directed to the IP Committee. COMMITTEE PROJECTS Featured IP One of CCN's successful projects is the 'Featured Information Provider' program. The program showcases a selected Information Provider each month. It was suggested by Doug that the program be expanded to each of the major subject areas. While the Featured IP would continue on the CCN main page (high profile), each subject page (lower profile), could also highlight a selected IP. This expansion would provide the various IP Editors the opportunity to interact with their IP's. IP's would benefit from this additional service. Features Editor The IWK-Grace Telethon has just past. Word-on-the-Street, Tall Ships, Jazz and other feastivals are coming. These events should be linked from CCN, so that CCN members would be able to locate information about them without having to search the 'net. For example, it was difficult to locate any information about the IWK Telethon on the net. For the last provincial election a link banner was installed on the CCN page pointing to the CBC (results) and various political party pages. IP, Editor Training Leo has suggested (via e-mail) that besides IP Training, that CCN should provide editor training. The object is to provide the opportunity to bring IP Editors up to date. IP PROCESS A discussion about the IP Process was conducted. David provided a progress report on how the neighbourhood concept was being intregrated into the database. The accounting module is ready to go. While IP editors and others will continue to have access to the IP data, only the office and other authorize persons will have read/write access to the accounting fields/records. --------------------------------------------------------------- This mail was sent through the Nova Scotia Provincial Server, with technical resources provided by Chebucto Community Net. http://nsaccess.ns.ca/mail/ http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/
