Hi Doug (and others), Being out two nights in a row for Chebucto, I'm not going to be able to take-in the IP meeting Thursday evening, so I just wanted to provide some input to your discussion agenda and look forward to some ideas and feedback. *With regard to a recent note I sent out concerning the new Gates Training Lab at the Alderney Gate Library being available to non-profit groups this coming fall, leads me to ask what kinds of workshops Chebucto could develop to address further support to IPs (in the fall) re. web design, information management, promotion tips for web sites, etc., etc. ?? This might also parallel something we could offer individual members as well who are developing their own personal websites ? As an aside, if some are interested, how should we invite individual members with personal web sites (and there are some good ones on Chebucto) to place their location within our IP directory ? Should we have somekind of sub-directory off the IP list to personal sites or something totally different ? *It is my hope that come the fall, Chebucto could assist our Editors better in how they support our IPs - what kind of things would Editors like to know in order to become proactive in their various section responsiblities ? ie. web design tips, designing information directories, search techniques, building dynamic specialized information databases on the web, etc. ??? Who might be able to facilitate such workshops (within and outside Chebucto) ? *What kind of sponsorship strategies should Chebucto consider for our IP sections ? For example, if someone goes to the IP alphabetical directory or the subject directory on our new homepage, I think Chebucto could market a 'sponsorship' banner in each of these areas ? Or for that matter, also co-market selected IP sites (the IP perhaps gets 60% and Chebucto maybe 40%). For example, the Scottish Heritage site, given it's traffic and hits, would they consider a travel related sponsorship banner from an airline ? A travel agency ? etc. Chebucto has a considerable amount of traffic and we don't take advantage of it very well from a revenue generating point of view - this doesn't mean we have our site cluttered with banners, far from it. But what kind of 'policy' should we develop for a tasteful and constructive approach where everybody can win ? I'd really like the input of the IP Committee and Editors on how we should approach this ? Lastly, I'm convinced that Chebucto needs to develop and encourage more dynamic content that includes not only active IP areas, but links that support community information from other servers in the HRM (the community portal idea) and can direct individualized requests to larger pools of information provincially, nationally and internationally - both through a search engine design process, but with a 'human touch.' We're starting to do this, but it will need consistent attention and development from all involved. For example, some of you have heard me talking about this for some time, but we're getting close to soon sitting aorund the same table to discuss the idea in a concrete fashion, namely how Chebucto might be able to partner with the HRM Library system, HRM City, Dal Library School and maybe HRDC/TSS/Aliant to begin work on how a community information portal site would be established, supported and maintained within a community development process. What contribution can the IP committee and Editors group make to this idea - is it too unrealistic ? What skills will be required ? (feeding back to the first request. re. workshops), etc. ? That's enough for now. Look forward to hearing what ideas and suggestions were exchanged on these questions and no doubt many others :) Cheers, Leo _________________________________________ Leo J.
