Hi everyone,

Chebucto Community Net, like many community nets across Canada and North
America, reflects a value system which respects all user needs within the
context of a community owned and operated technological infrastructure for
Internet access and community capacity building.

In many of our projects and initiatives we're also trying to organize and
collaborate in various ways to ensure affordable access for all peoples and
organizations. But often in our work, we might forget how all the related
equipment, hardware and software comes to us in terms of production.

Often we do not create computer components or build machines (okay,
sometimes we try and accomplish a great deal in our efforts !), but all the
same, we may recommend and purchase components at various times. Below is a
reflection that was passed on to me recently. I think it speaks for itself.


Within the hype of 'training and high-paying jobs' in IT, and making
instant 'millions' on the internet and all that crap, there is also an
underbelly of abuse and serious dehumanization going on which we need to be
mindful off.

Chebucto, and I feel Community Nets as a whole, must ensure that whatever
we choose to purchase or particpate in in terms of computer components,
etc., we're not going to stand for labour abuse in the assemble of such
componets, and we will endeavor to help others to be knowledgeable of what
they support in their purchasing power.

Maybe it's time we seek company statements of their labour practices and
assembly line hourly wages to determine whether we will purchase from them
? This gets messy, but I think we have to start somewhere. In many ways
this is like the child labour issues that came up through the work and
awareness campaigns of that noble fellow, Mr. Craig Kilburger.

Do we want just talk about how bad such abuses might be, or do we
concretely do something about it? The choice is in our hands. The first
step is to be aware, so here it is...
