Dear CCN Internet Provider committee,

I have been a CCN member since the freenet started over three years ago.
I'm proposing to establish and maintain an IP website of waypoints
(global position coordinates) for GPS satellite navigation users.

Handheld GPS units are frequently being used nowadays by business people
and other frequent travellers (like me) to find their way while visiting
new locations. But in order for the GPS to work, it has to know a
"waypoint" location - either by having been there before and told to
remember, or by having the coordinates inputed by the user beforehand.
You'd think there'd be a bunch of waypoint lists online already for GPS
users. It turns out there aren't.

Currently, the only waypoint resources on-line are alphabetical lists of
a few cities and their airports' positions. My site will be geographical
- for example, the user will begin on the main page with a list of
continents, then will progress to countries, then cities... ultimately,
I'd like to establish a database of coordinates of 5 or 10 well-known
landmarks within major world cities. Like the Halifax Commons, or the
Dartmouth Parclo, or Times Square. These coordinates would be provided
by GPS users worldwide. I've floated this idea on the USENET group
sci.geo.satellite-nav and have been surprised at the number of people
who have indicated their willingness to participate.

I know this project would be a lot of work. But I believe it would be
well-used by thousands of GPS travellers every month. I'm
well-experienced in website creation and maintenence- I have established
sites for the NS Film Development Corporation
(http://fox.nstn.ca/~nsfdc/), my school where I teach here in Seoul
(http://www.uriel.net/~tefa/) and even 1998 ECMA winners Johnny
Favourite (http://www.netcom.ca/~jfo/) as well as my own Korea-oriented
homepage here at CCN.

I'm going to be in Korea for another three months, but would like to
begin my project now. When I leave I'll also have to abandon my current
Korean ISP, which is why I'd like to use CCN as a permanent base for
this site.

I am submitting the on-line application form right now. I hope you can
help me.

Sincerely,
David Waugh
