Is Chebucto Community Net operated for profit like other network providers?
Chebucto Community Net is a non-profit organisation and is operated by the Metro Community Access Network Society a society registered with the Province of Nova Scotia. Chebucto Community Net is very much a community resource like the Library or the Y*CA, only it's services are provided by computer.
I've been accessing the Chebucto Community Net from a Public Access Terminal because I don't have the equipment at home. What are the minumum equipment requirements to access the Chebucto Community Net from home.
Chebucto Community Net can be accessed with just a dumb terminal and an external modem. Dumb terminals can quite often be found very cheaply (I found one myself for $10 not so long ago). The modem cost will depend on the speed. 2400 baud external modems can be purchased second-hand for under $50. 14400 modems cost $100 and up.
Can I only see other user's profiles when those users are logged in?
Of course, by using the shortcut key 'g who' you can see who is online with you and by following the link beside a name you go to their profile. If they are not online, however, you can reach their profile by using the Find other people shortcut key 'g people'. Fill in the form, submit it and a list of matches to your search name will result. Choose the appropriate name to find their profile.
