I'd guess libc5 vs. libc6 problem (ldd /bin/who, /bin/w, /bin/login etc.,
chances are they're not all using the same libc5).

Upgrade your packages to the most recent RH5.2 versions (maybe 6.0,
but I think it uses glibc2.1 which is trickier).
