The answer is a big "it depends". You can certainly have a French message
use more lines than the English one, but how the program deals with it is
another matter. If the output is HTML then it is almost always fine.
You do have to retain the right format:
msgid "English brief text"
msgstr "French verbose text............................................ "
"more French text"
The above would simply concatenate the two French strings in the output
(note the space at the end of the first French string).
msgid "English brief text"
msgstr "French verbose text............................................\n"
"more French text"
The above would produce two lines of French output. How the program would
handle this is an open question. Certainly in lynx it would not work
in most contexts, but other programs may be more flexible.
