The problem was traced to the internationalized version of gawk. I hard
coded the script to use /usr/bin/gawk (gawk v2.15p6) and all is well for
archiving on WWHCN.

David T., gawk v3.0.2 appears to be writting a null character for each all
characters in the previously archived message. The header/footer output is
OK on the first threaded message, with the message characters all nulls.
The second threaded message (including the header/footer) is all nulls.
The script is running under GNU sh, version 1.14.6(1) on WWHCN.
