ping is another problem area, particularly when specifying a count. 'ping host -c 2' on Linux is the same as 'ping host 2' on SunOS or Solaris. How about a variable PINGCOUNTOPT which would be defined as "-c" on Linux, undefined on SunOS/Solaris.
