I've been following this thread with some interest. Here are
some of my thoughts. The problem with Cobequid Community Network is
that it is running one of the prerelease versions of CSuite. The
version of Lynx in the prereleases can't handle the recent changes
that HotMail made to their site. There are also a number of other
problems with that version of Lynx, including security bugs. So, in
order to support HotMail, those sites will need to upgrade, which
should be done anyways.

As for the librarian's comment that PINE is too difficult, I
think it's completely bogus. That comment assumes that the average
user is either a complete moron or extremely lazy. There are
certainly users that will fall into these categories, but most people
are fully capable of learning PINE. PINE is extremely easy to use.

As for a HotMail like service in Canada, it would be fairly easy
for a community net to set it up on their own system. There are three
ways of doing this, use a commercial product, use a free product, or
roll your own. Obviously, the last option isn't suitable for most
sites. The products that I know about are:

commercial - Dmailweb, and CWmail -- http://www.netwinsite.com/
free - Endymion MailMan -- http://www.endymion.com/products/mailman/

If anybody knows of any other products to do this, I'd be interested
in hearing about them.

Finally, as has been mentioned, the BC Community Networks
Association is in the process of setting up CWmail on their server for
use by their members. It should be completed this week.
