Unfortunately, volunteer activity is not currently reaching its full potential. This is not because of a lack of willingness on the part of CCN users and members, but instead from a lack of coordination of volunteer activity. The responsibility for this has changed hands several times in the past year and rested most recently with myself, Jan Fullerton.
I took on the project late last fall because I was concerned that too few volunteers were carrying too much of the workload. Unfortunately, I did not yet appreciate the sheer immensity of the project. Although my spirit was willing, my time schedule was not. I have not been able to catch up on the back list of people who have volunteered, nor have I been able to re-structure the system of volunteer coordination to be more efficient and responsive. For this, I sincerely apologize, and I have resigned from the Board of Directors to allow someone with more time to take my place.
What *was* accomplished in recent months were the first steps toward building a new volunteer site on-line and developing a committee to coordinate volunteers. This responsibility has, in the past, resided with one individual - the Volunteer Coordinator. This person is responsible for responding to all offers to volunteer, matching these people with the appropriate committees, and soliciting new volunteers. In an organization with thousands of users and over a dozen committees and teams, this project is beyond the scope of any single volunteer. The 1996 Board of Directors has been discussing various options for the future organisation of volunteers. The 1997 Board of Directors will have to decide which of these is the best solution.
In the meantime, thank you again to all those who have helped. To those who have volunteered and received insufficient response, please consider re-offering your services. While I can't guarantee an immediate improvement, your contribution is valuable and badly needed.
