Hec Crighton Trophy as outstanding player
Mark Nohra, running back, UBC Thunderbirds
Nohra at 5'-11" an 226 lb. is a two-time all-Canadian who led Canada West
in rushing and topped the nation in touchdowns with 11. Three of
those touchdowns came Oct 25 at Calgary, when Nohra had 48 carries for 351
yards, both CIAU season highs.
Nohra, 24, joined the Thunderbirds from Toronto's Michael Power
High. He also had 11 receptions for 179 yards.
Mark combines speed with strength and, according to
UBC coaching staff, has a strong work ethic. He has 4.4
speed and bench-pressed 225 pounds 41 times at an NFL combines camp.

J. P. Metras Trophy for Linemen:
Mike Kushnir, St Francis Xavier
Kushnir, 22, a 6'-4" 266 lb. defensive tackle, is a five-time Atlantic all-star with the X-Men. This season he had 31 tackles, 4.5 sacks and one forced fumble. These stats were achieved despite often being double- and triple-teamed. Mike played high school
football at Notre Dame in Wilcox, Sask.

President's Trophy for defensive players:
Jason Van Geel, Waterloo
Van Geel, 22, at 6'-1" and 240 lb., is a two-time first-team all-Canadian
linebacker He had
69 tackles and 4.5 sacks for a stingy Warrior defence. Jason combines
quickness (4.68) and power (445 bench, 550
squat) to be a dominant force. He also served as Waterloo's fullback
on short-yardage situations.

Peter Gorman Trophy for Rookie of the year:
Paul Carty, St Francis Xavier
Carty, 19, burst onto the CIAU scene with a 1,000-yard season. The
5'-11" 180 lb. running back had 1,087
yards rushing. This led the Atlantic conference and was third in the
country. His average carry (9.9) also was tops in the CIAU. He averaged
11 yards per catch and returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. Paul played high school football in Kingston ON.

Russ Jackson Award:

The third-year medical student, who was an academic all-Canadian the past three
years, starts an internship at Edmonton hospitals on Nov. 24.
Stetsko, 22, a left guard, was a first-team all-Canadian
this season and was voted the most dedicated Alberta player by his
teammates.
Frank Tindall Trophy for Coach of the year:
John Stevens, St Francis Xavier
Stevens, in his fourth season as head coach of the X-Men, guided the
Antigonish, N.S. school's team to a 7-1 record and a first-place finish
in the Atlantic conference.
Two of his players, Mike Kushnir and Paul Carty,
have also received national awards
