WIth 15 second half points, Randy Nohr led StFX to a comeback 68-62 win over Saint Mary's to claim the UAAA/AUS championship and a berth in next week's Final8. SMU led most of the way, and were ahead with 1:30 to go when Nohr nailed a field goal to tie at 62-62, then drained the following foul shot, to go ahead by one, then Nohr, Dennie Oliver and Jordan Croucher made 5 foul shots to pull ahead by 6. X had the lead (2) for only a minute or so in the first half, led by 3 briefly with about 7 minutes to go, then took the lead for good with a minut and a half to go. The last FG of the game was Nohr's shot to tie the game with 1:30 to go. Their run of free throws at the end gave them their biggest lead at 6. Fred Perry who had 30 points the previous night was held scoreless from the field, going 0 for 11 in the face of tough SMU defense. However, he attracted quite a few fouls, and shot 12 of 14 from the line. Perry added 12 rebounds. Early on SMU handled the StFX press quite well, actually slowing down the StFX speed to their won game. For about 2/3 of the game SMU looked like the dominant team. But, as the 2nd half wore on SMU began turning over the ball and missing easy baskets. Perhaps playing their third consecutive game to X's two began to show. The legs may have been going. It certainly showed in the last couple of minutes. Cyril Smith had a career game for Saint Mary's with 20 points and 6 reb., but also had a career 7 turnovers.. Both teams started the game with the jitters, passing out of bounds, errant passes, turnovers in the first couple of minutes, then settled down to play a classic battle. It was exciting basketball.

The heavyweights meet Sunday at 2:00. 6,500 saw the semis, so there should be a big Sunday crowd. The 6,500 was rumored to be a record for the AUAA (or AUS) championship.

Saint Mary's got out to a quick 10-point lead, saw it shrink to two, then cruised to a 36-26 half-time lead on their way to an 87-68 victory over UNB.

The 2nd half was more of the same as SMU continued a 12-0 run that began in the first half, and ran the score to 44-26. The talented but young UNB squad was unable to overcome the power of the defending CIAU Champs and close the gap. SMU, then UNB, emptied their benches in the final few minutes, with SMU no doubt interested in saving legs for the Sunday final.

Game Three

STFX ran into trouble early and had to make adjustments when superstar Dennie Oliver picked up 2 quick fouls, and unhappily played only 5 minutes in the first half and had 2 points. Not the usual Dennie Oliver contribution.

In the meantime Fred Perry went to work, scoring 17 first-half points that kept StFX in the lead. Nevertheless Acadia stayed close, trailing about 8 or 9 points throughout the game. Amazingly, StFx seemed to be leaving them in it, where a couple of threes would close the score. It didn't happen.

The final score was not indicative of the game. StFX finished with a 14-1 run to bloat the final score. Despite being within range of a victory, Acadia was unable to score a field goal in about the last 2 minutes. An interesting first-half stat was total FG shots. Acadia had 22 and made 10. StFXs had 42! and made anly 16.

This game was close early, tied at 28-28 late in the first half when Acadia went on a late 13-3 run, and finished the half up ten at 43-33. The rest of the game they maintained an 8 or 10 point lead. In the first Memorial out-rebounded Acadia 32-20, with Jeff Saxby and Matthew Chapman each pulling down 11.

Chapman, the Nation's rebounding leader had a total of 23 for the game, 15 in the offensive end, but solid post play by Acadia prevented him from scoring, limiting him to just 4 baskets.

In the morning shoot, Chapman was nailing long baskets while sitting in a chair on the team bench...

Tonight UCCB took a commanding lead early on a stifling in-your-face defense led by Guard Steve Nelson, then gradually saw Saint mary's climb back in for a thrilling 79-71 AUAA Playoff win. Nelson in one stretch had two steals from Jonah Taussig and forced about 5 turnovers by Taussig, Cyril Smith and Kurt Henry.

Early it looked like it was all over for the defending champs who would have been out of it if not for the stellar play of Center Patrick Toulouse with 14 first-half points. Chris Kallan reported in the Daily news that Toulouse hadn't practiced with the team all week, having spent the week in the IWK/Grace hospital with his wife for the delivery of a baby on Wed.

Fouls played a big part in UCCB's downfall and SMU's recovery. UCCB outfouled SMU 20 to 7 in the second half, many when they began to sense a big upset and became overly aggressive defensively, and later when they had to foul to try to get back in.

At one point SMU were down by 13 in the second half, but a 9-0 run brought them back to within four. SMU converted that to a 20-point turnaround in the second half. Smith tied it at 57-57 and moments later Taussig put them ahead to stay with 4:40 remaining.

It was a game of two halves. It was a hard, physical game. It SMU though they were in a breather to ease into Saturday's semi, they were mistaken.
