Rocket Ronnie, Airborne and Popeye paddled approximately 30 KLMS of the
Stewiacke River on Sunday 6 May 2001.
The Rocket lived up to his name in
his 17 foot sea kayak and the other two did the distance in white water
boats (bad decision), water was high but flat, fast in places and like a
calm lake in others. Little to no white water, but lots of wild life,
deer, eagles, ducks, geese and pot smokers. The River switched back and
forth considerably between Middle Stewiacke and Stewiacke East and in fact
we were on the same farm property for 45 minutes looking at the same house
in the distance.
The trip from Upper Stewiacke to Middle Stewiacke was with
friends of the Rocket from his cycling club and the vegetarian, tree
hugger, oatmeal group from Halifax County (they were fine people and
shared their lunches and stuff with we not so prepared and going twice as
far as they were). Total time was approximately 5 hours and to be honest
this would be a wonderful overnite adventure for non A types( who must do
more and more in less and less time.)
Had great beef soup in the Upper
Stewiacke Diner and we all headed our separate ways, making a promise to
do an adventure a month until November. We certainly saw all sides of the
river in the white water boats and if Ron paddled 30 klms, Airborne and
Popeye paddled 40. Clear warm day on the North Shore and training is great.
