Virtual Domain Hosting

The Chebucto Community Net is able to host Virtual Domain Names on our web server so that your organization or business can have users access them via a custom domain name such as www.your-organization.ns.ca or www.your-organization.com. Depending on your group or company this can be a great advantage since you can have any name you desire (not already in use) reflected in your URL and email addresses.

If you decide to proceed with having a Virtual Domain Name, there are a number of steps to creating and registering it. You have two main options:

  1. You can register a *.CA domain through CIRA, [e.g. http://www.your-organization.ns.ca] or

  2. You can register a domain of the types *.COM, *.NET or *.ORG through one of the registrars listed below [e.g. http://www.your-organization.com, etc.]

In either case, when you are applying for a domain name, you will need to know the following technical information:

Tech-Name: Chris Maxwell
Tech-Title: Technical Director, Chebucto Community Net
Tech-Postal: Room 006, Chase Building
                Dalhousie University
                Halifax, Nova Scotia
                B3H 4R2
Tech-Phone: +1 902 494 2449
Tech-Mailbox: headtech@chebucto.ns.ca
Location: 44 52 00 N / 63 43 00 W

NS1-Hostname: phoenix.chebucto.ns.ca
NS1-Netaddress: 192.75.95.88

NS2-Hostname: ns.freenet.victoria.bc.ca
NS2-Netaddress: 199.60.222.2

Please enter this carefully and exactly in the appropriate places in the application form. If you have any question as to what to fill in please contact the Chebucto Office at office@chebucto.ns.ca and ask for clarification.

If you would like to get a domain name with the *.CA system:

  1. Visit http://www.cira.ca and read all the applicable documents about applying for a domain name for your organization from the Registry.

  2. Your organization must approve the domain name and it must conform to the requirements of the Registry. More on this can be found on the CIRA website here.

  3. Pick a registrar. You should check not only prices (which vary), but the terms of their agreement with you. A list of .ca registars can be found on the CIRA website:
    http://ro.cira.ca/re_choose_en

  4. Complete the application form found at the registrar site. Be sure to have your organization's Registry of Joint Stocks' registration number handy. Please note that registrar fees are in addition to any fees Chebucto charges for hosting your domain name. Most registrars are geared to handling payment primarily by credit card. Make sure that you are on a secure server page (https:// address in the Address or Location window of your web browser) before giving your credit information out.

  5. Once you have received approval of your domain name from your registrar, you can contact the Chebucto Office about getting us to host your domain.

  6. VDN hosting fees are payable in advance and you will receive an email notification from the Chebucto Office of your VDN's status and the VDN hosting expiry date. Please save this letter.

If you would like a domain name of the form *.ORG, *.NET or *.COM then:

  1. Visit any of:

    1. Webnames.Ca site: http://www.webnames.ca/

    2. The Net Wizards website located at http://www.netwiz.net/; or

    3. The Domain Bank website located at http://www.domainbank.net; or

    4. The CASDNS Inc. website located at http://www.casdns.net/; or

    5. The Register.com website located at http://www.register.com/; or

    6. The Network Solutions website located at http://www.networksolutions.com; or

    7. Or any of the other registrars listed at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) site at http://www.icann.org/.

  2. Fees will vary from registrar to registrar so it is good to shop around. You should also be sure to read the terms of their agreement with you. Please note that registrar fees are in addition to any fees Chebucto charges for hosting your domain name. Most registrars are geared to handling payment primarily by credit card. Make sure that you are on a secure server page (https:// address in the Address or Location window of your web browser) before giving your credit information out.

  3. Once you have received approval of your domain name from your registrar, you can contact the Chebucto Office about getting us to host your domain.

  4. VDN hosting fees are payable in advance and you will receive an email notification from the Chebucto Office of your VDN's status and the VDN hosting expiry date. Please save this letter.

Under both scenarios you will also need to let the Chebucto Office know how to set up your email. We set up Virtual Domain Names with two email aliases, typically <info@your-domain> and <webmaster@your-domain>. We need to know to which actual email address you would like mail to these addresses to be redirected, so please let us know at the same time that you send in your hosting request.

You will be notified when the new domain and the email aliasing has been setup and you will then be able to test your new domain and the email addresses associated with it.
