The land rose steeply from the water although the cove had a nice soft bottom at three fathoms. We did some bushwhacking up the hillside along a stream of falling water but it descended so precipitously that there were no suitable bathing pools to be found. Back aboard the schooner John turned to reading and Ed commenced napping after tending the woodstove.

When the nap period was over, it was too late to think about moving on, and besides, it was time for supper. A short, fruitless effort to find a fish gave us the opportunity to meet a pair of otters, who departed after carefully inspecting us. The evening held promise with a full complement of stars, the big dipper directly over the waterfall.
