Concertina on the South Coast of Newfoundland, 20 July 2006


Four weeks along the South Coast of Newfoundland aboard the “Concertina” from mid-July to mid-August 2006.
Thursday, 20 July 2006	Aviron Bay to Jerseyman Harbour; Ideal sailing conditions take us well on our way east.
	July 20th dawned sunny and clear with the promise of a fine northerly breeze.
	We spoke with the Halifax sloop as we crossed the shoal and left the Northwest Arm of Aviron Bay.
	We marveled at the ability of these trees to sustain life, hanging tenaciously to breaks in the rock walls, a Newfoundland theme. We saw our first whale, a Minke in the outer part of Aviron Bay.
	The engine was shut down at Aviron Rock and we set a SE course before the SW breeze. The day was wonderfully clear with the view of the coastline to the north and eastward towards Pass Island a grand panorama as we passed Heritage Bay. St.Pierre and Miquelon were visible to starboard.
	We logged about 50 nautical miles from Aviron Bay to Harbour Breton under ideal sailing conditions this day. By 1830 the wind was letting up so we turned on the engine to weather Connaigre Head and on into Jerseyman Harbour.
	It was a good feeling to have the hook down before nightfall in a peaceful broad cove, where we were greeted by two boatloads of young people out for an evening lark. Later the lights of Harbour Breton shone vividly to the westward, as did the Milky Way in the sky above us. Bioluminescence in the water amused the crew as they prepared for sleep.
