Janet MacKay, B.Sc., B.R.E.
President
Clan MacKay Society of New Scotland
Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada)
Janet's paternal ancestors emigrated from Rogart, Clyne and Dornoch in Sutherland, Scotland, in the early 1800s. On each of her five trips to Scotland, she spent time with her cousins in Sutherland. She also revisited Clan MacKay ancestral homelands, including Rossal in Rogart, the croft where her great-great-grandparents brought up their family and operated a grist mill. See the Clan MacKay homepages.
She studied at an Academy and two universities founded by Highland Scots: Pictou Academy (Pictou, NS), Queens University (Kingston, Ontario) and Dalhousie University (Halifax, NS). She acquired her Journalism and other education at various colleges in Regina, Saskatachewan, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
In the early 1970s Sam MacKay, her first cousin and esteemed older friend, inspired Janet to explore, research and document their mutual paternal ancestry and heritage. Sam MacKay was one of the four founding members of the Clan MacKay Society in Ontario.
It was Ida MacKay, who founded the Clan MacKay Society of New Scotland, who inspired Janet to become involved in the Clan MacKay Society of New Scotland as seanachaidh (genealogist) in 1983. A year later, with others, Janet instigated a Clan MacKay newsletter, now called "The MacKay Times of New Scotland". It is the community spirit, also the sense of extended family, that inspires clansfolk to support their clan societies.
Janet currently makes her home in Halifax, Nova Scotia's capital city, where she works as a freelance journalist and photographer. Her writing specialities include such diverse areas as Scottish Heritage, history and folklore of the Atlantic provinces, business and cyberspace. Among her recent honours, Janet includes the commission to write a book, the biography of Lilla Stirling who inspired her in the craft of wordsmithing.
Janet's New Scotland (Nova Scotia) home page can be reached at The Land of Janet MacKay. Her Scotland home page, Tribute to MacKay Heritage, resides on the other side of the "Great Atlantic Roar" on ALMAC in Grangemouth, Scotland:
