For conspicuous gallantry and resource on the 24th May, 1915 at Festubert, when he accompanied the men over the parapet in the charge [on] K5 [trench], and immediately began attending the wounded and rendering first aid under very heavy fire. He continued doing so all day, locate the wounded in the open during the day light, and, when darkness came on, assisted to remove them to a place of safety. His bravery and devotion to duty were very marked.
